Elections
Voting in Northfield
The Town Clerk runs elections for the Town of Northfield. Registration, absentee ballots, and questions about your ballot all go through the Clerk's office.
Next election: General Election, Tuesday, November 3, 2026
Polls are open 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Northfield Town Hall. Bring an acceptable photo ID. You can see your ballot ahead of time at myvote.wi.gov.
Depending on which school district you live in, your ballot may also include a referendum question from the School District of Black River Falls or the Whitehall School District. School districts are separate units of government from the Town, and questions about a referendum should go to the district. See the Northfield sample ballots.
Northfield sample ballots
Northfield votes as one ward, Ward 1, but there are three ballot styles. Which one you get depends on the school district you live in. Each sample shows the front and back of the ballot. Sample ballots are for reference only and cannot be used to vote.

Election notices for November 3, 2026
Where election notices are posted. Election notices are posted at the Northfield Town Hall, on the front door and the bulletin board on the west side of the building, and here on this website. Town Board and Sanitary District No. 2 meeting agendas are posted in more places; see how meetings are noticed.
The Type B notice was posted September 29, 2026. The Type D and Type E notices and the in-person absentee flyer were reposted October 5, 2026 with the current in-person absentee hours.
- Notice of General Election and Sample Ballot (Type B) (PDF). This notice and its sample ballot come from the Jackson County Clerk and cover every race and question in the county. Not every race on it is on a Northfield ballot. For the ballots Northfield voters will actually get, see Northfield sample ballots.

Photo ID
Wisconsin requires an acceptable photo ID to vote. A Wisconsin driver license, a Wisconsin state ID card, a U.S. passport, a military ID, and certain other IDs are accepted. The address on the ID does not have to be current. There is no separate voter ID card, and a REAL ID is not required.
Registering to vote
You may register online or by mail up to the deadline set for each election, in the Clerk's office until the Friday before the election at 5:00 p.m., or at the polling place on election day. To register you need proof of residence, such as a utility bill or bank statement with your name and current address.
Register or check your status at myvote.wi.gov.
Absentee voting
Any registered voter may request an absentee ballot. Request one through myvote.wi.gov or in writing to the Clerk. Most requests must be received by the Clerk by 5:00 p.m. on the Thursday before the election.
Your completed ballot must be in the Clerk's hands, not merely postmarked, by 8:00 p.m. on election day. A witness must sign the certificate on the envelope.
In-person absentee voting
You can vote absentee in person at the Clerk's office. You show your photo ID, get your ballot, fill it out there, and hand it back. The Clerk witnesses it, so you do not need to bring a witness with you.
State law sets the outside limits. Under Wis. Stat. § 6.86(1)(b), in-person absentee voting can begin no earlier than 14 days before the election and must end no later than the Sunday before it. No in-person absentee voting may be offered on the Monday before election day. Within those limits, each clerk sets the days and hours.
| Election | First day | Last day |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday, November 3, 2026 | Tuesday, October 20, 2026 | Friday, October 30, 2026 |
In-person absentee voting in Northfield is by appointment. Appointments are available Tuesdays through Fridays, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., from Tuesday, October 20 through Friday, October 30. There are no weekend or Monday hours.
Call or text the Clerk at (301) 752-0774 to set a time. The earlier you call, the easier it is to find a slot that suits you. Voting takes about ten minutes.
The last day is Friday, October 30. If you have not voted by then, vote at the polls on Tuesday, November 3, from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Running for town office
All five town offices (Chairman, Supervisor I, Supervisor II, Clerk, and Treasurer) are on the ballot at the spring election in odd-numbered years. The next one is April 6, 2027. Any qualified elector of the Town may run.
Northfield nominates candidates by caucus, not by circulating nomination papers. The caucus is a public meeting held in January before the spring election. Anyone present may nominate a candidate from the floor, and if more than two people are nominated for an office, those present vote and the top two go on the ballot.
The Town Board sets the caucus date between December 1 and January 1, and the caucus is held between January 2 and January 21. The 2025 caucus was held January 21. The date is noticed and posted like any other public meeting.
Being nominated at the caucus is not the last step. Each nominee must also file a declaration of candidacy and a campaign registration statement with the Clerk. Talk to the Clerk in the fall if you are thinking about running, so nothing gets missed.
Working the polls
The Town needs election inspectors. It is paid work, it is good work, and training is provided. If you are interested, contact the Clerk.
